Carcavelos is the longest beach on the Cascais line — over a kilometre of sand with consistent waves that made it Greater Lisbon's go-to surf school spot. Dozens of schools operate on the beach through the warmer months.
It's the easiest beach to reach from central Lisbon: 25 minutes by train from Cais do Sodré, with the station three minutes' walk from the sand. The São Julião da Barra fortress sits at the eastern end as a backdrop. Draws a young, student-heavy crowd; very busy on weekends.
