The central town beach in Cascais sits inside the sheltered bay, with fine sand and calmer water than the exposed west coast — the south-facing orientation and natural bay shelter both contribute. It's lined with restaurants and connects to the seaside promenade running east to Estoril.
This is the spot for a quick swim between sightseeing in the historic centre, the marina, or the Boca do Inferno cliffs nearby. Direct train from Lisbon's Cais do Sodré in 40 minutes. Caveat: very crowded in August.
