Costa Nova Beach

Praia da Costa Nova is one of Portugal's most recognisable beaches, thanks to its seafront of "palheiros" — former fishermen's wooden cottages painted with alternating vertical stripes in red, blue, green and white. They were originally beach huts supporting traditional "arte xávega" net fishing; today they serve as seasonal housing and the region's visual signature.

The sand is wide, west-facing, with the typical surf of central Portugal. The village runs along the dune strip between the open Atlantic and the Aveiro lagoon. Access by bridge from Aveiro and Ílhavo. Local restaurants tied to the lagoon's fishing heritage.
