Nazaré has two distinct identities. In winter, it's the world capital of big-wave surfing — the Nazaré Canyon, an underwater chasm that runs close to shore, funnels Atlantic swell into waves that regularly top 20 meters at neighbouring Praia do Norte.
The summer brings a classic Portuguese beach atmosphere: wide sand, seafood restaurants serving the local dried-fish specialty, and the cliffside Sítio district above, reached by a historic funicular. About 90 minutes from Lisbon by car.
