Praia de Tavira sits on Ilha de Tavira, a barrier island in the Ria Formosa lagoon that shields the coast from direct Atlantic swell. Access is exclusively by ferry from Quatro Águas (a 10-minute crossing) or by direct boat from central Tavira — no road link.
The separation from the mainland has preserved the dune landscape and kept development pressure low despite the city's proximity.
